Standardbred
Retraining
At Well Equestrians, we have a deep love for the Standardbred breed. These horses are some of the kindest, most willing, and most intelligent partners you'll find. With the right guidance, they can transition beautifully from their life on the track or as driving horses to confident, happy riding horses.
But we also understand that this transition takes time, patience, and a specialized approach.

The Unique Challenges Standardbreds Face
Standardbreds are often overlooked in the riding world—not because they aren’t capable, but because the transition from harness to saddle can be misunderstood.
When they first arrive, they may struggle with:
-
Bending and flexion – They often carry tension through the poll and back and can feel stiff or locked up.
-
Bit sensitivity or resistance – Some run through the bit, while others overreact or shut down completely.
-
Pacing instead of trotting – A natural gait for many Standardbreds, pacing can make trotting under saddle a frustrating experience—for both horse and rider.
-
Difficulty picking up the trot or canter – Not due to laziness or defiance, but because it’s a new request that takes physical and mental adjustment.
-
Anxiety or shutdown behavior – Some horses come off the track with trauma, confusion, or emotional shutdown that requires a soft, consistent hand to work through.
-
Green behavior – Even older Standardbreds may lack basic riding horse education and confidence.

Our Approach
We offer patient, individualized training that honors the horse's history and supports them step-by-step as they learn to use their bodies and minds in new ways. We never force or rush—we build trust, teach mechanics, and celebrate progress at every stage. Whether your Standardbred needs help with basic transitions, finding their canter, or just learning to relax under saddle, we’re here to help.
Sessions are $75/hour and are tailored to meet your horse’s current level and long-term goals.
Why We Love Standardbreds
There’s something special about this breed. Standardbreds are thinkers. They want to understand. They thrive on consistency and kindness. And once they understand the question, they try—again and again. That heart, that honesty, and that work ethic make them one of our favorite breeds to retrain.
If you're working with a Standardbred or thinking about giving one a new career, we’d love to be part of your journey.
